Why Witches Use Bones
Bones carry stories. They are the remains that linger after all else has returned to earth, holding the memory of life and the spirit that once moved through them. For witches, bones are more than relics of the dead. They are vessels of power, connecting us to ancestors, spirits and the natural cycles of life and death.
When a witch holds a bone, it is not seen as a hollow thing. It is understood as a bridge. Ancestors can be reached through it, not because the soul is trapped there, but because bones carry resonance. They remind us of those who came before and give us something physical to anchor our whispers and offerings. This is why so many traditions keep animal bones on altars, or why some witches wear a small fragment as a charm. It is not the object itself that does the work, but the spirit it calls to mind and the line it ties us back into.
Bones are also fierce protectors. A charm made with animal bone can stand as a guard, reminding us of the animal’s spirit and asking it to lend its strength. The sharp edge of a rib or the solid weight of a tooth can be worked into amulets that keep harmful energies away. Many old folk charms placed bones above doorways or into the hearth so that they became part of the house’s body, like an unseen skeleton defending the home.
Then there is the calling of the dead. Bones have long been used as tools to reach across the veil. Some witches scatter them for divination, each fall said to carry the voice of the ancestors or the spirit world. Others keep skulls on their altars as a way to focus their sight when whispering to the dead. Even a small bone, taken with respect, can serve this purpose. It is about creating a channel, a way of saying, “I am listening, speak if you will.”
Working with bones is not about collecting morbid curiosities. It is about relationship. A witch who picks up a bone in the wild will often pause, speak words of thanks, and ask if it wants to be part of their work. Some bones say no, and should be left where they lie. Others feel alive with invitation. When they are brought into the witch’s home, they are cleaned and honoured, not hidden away in shame.
Bones remind us that death is not an ending but a transformation. Flesh falls away, but the story continues in different forms, and witches recognise this as sacred. To work with bone is to accept mortality, to respect the cycle and to remember that strength remains even after life has shifted. They are not trophies. They are teachers. They are not a commodity.
To sum all that up, this is why witches use bones…..to honour the dead, to draw on ancestral strength and to walk with spirits who linger just beyond our sight
